Maz’s #findyourinnerwarrior story

In a world that can seem very black and white sometimes Maz Ullah definitely adds a pop of colour. The London based content creator is known for her cool way of styling streetwear  and the authentic approach on her social platforms. I met Maz at an event and approached her as I thought she was the trendiest dressed person there and proceeded to ask her where every element of her outfit was from. She was super lovely and we ended up chatting for a little while. I could see her passion for streetwear and fashion just through our conversations.

Her journey began by posting colour coordinated content and outfits. At first she hadn’t planned this but her content seemed to flow perfectly with different colour themes and Maz loved creating the content just for fun. People loved the coordination and satisfaction of seeing the blocks of colour Maz created and her following grew from people wanting to see her next outfit. However one of the challenges Maz faced was to consistently make content and as this wasn’t her full time job she didn’t post constantly and her following dropped off at a point.

4 years ago Maz was approached by an agency as they loved her socials so much that they wanted to represent her. This is when she realised that she could actually make money from her content and it could be more than just fun content she created. What started as a hobby quickly transformed into a full-time career, thanks to her dedication and creativity. She now loves curating outfits, researching into brands and properly putting time and thought into her content while still keeping the fun and colour themed elements which she loved before. Maz said no matter what you wear you should feel confident and comfortable and that’s what she loves showcasing.

Social media has given her the power to build her confidence through posting herself, going to events and brand trips. The community she has built especially with other influencers or female followers means a lot to her and her greatest achievement which surpasses working with brands like Ellesse and JD Women is the friends she has made through her platforms.

She said it’s been hard as brown female content creator for larger audiences to relate to her and sometimes get the same engagement as other influencers do. She finds that speaking to other POC content creators they have the same issue as they feel like sometimes they are defined by their background instead who they are as a content creator. A lot of the time Maz is the only woman of colour on a brand shoot especially in the streetwear industry and as much as she loves that she is representing her community and hopefully inspiring other young content creators she wants POC content creators to be the norm on shoots and brand trips.

On a trip to France with one of her friends they had a conversation about feeling judged even by their own community and their past traumas with religion. Maz wanted to create a completely non-judgemental space where all Muslims felt safe but also for people to learn about their culture and religion. This is when she created @spacemuslimwellness as she wanted people to feel like it was ok to be on a journey with themselves and religion. You don’t always have to be in the same place as others or practice faith in the same way and she sometimes felt judged if she didn’t. Community is so important in faith but practicing faith is a solo journey which is so personal to each individual. No one should be able to tell you that you’re practicing it wrong as no one has the answer to the correct way. She wanted to put good energy into the world and @spacemuslimwellness is a platform for this.

One piece of advice is Maz would give to any aspiring content creators is that everyone has a unique voice so no matter if you think someone’s heard something a million times they haven’t heard it from you so be confident in your individuality. There’s only one you and there’s always going to be at least one person that’s going to relate to you. So even if you can change one person’s mindset in a positive way then go for it.
